Osaki Electric Co., Ltd, EDMI’s parent company in Japan, announced that the Group was recognised with a “B” rating in the 2023 Climate Change assessment by CDP, a non-profit organisation headquartered in England, that runs a global disclosure system to score companies and cities on environmental management in taking actions against climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
As part of Osaki Group, EDMI will continue to work with our stakeholders through smart metering solutions to contribute to minimising environmental impact and the sustainable development of society.
In December 2022, EDMI set its own Sustainability Policy and Materiality Goals to drive sustainable business practices in line with Osaki’s sustainability goals.

EDMI, a Global Energy Solution Leader, has successfully delivered over 9 million SMETS2 devices as part of the ongoing residential smart meter rollout in Great Britain. This milestone includes 5 million Communications Hubs and 4 million smart electricity and gas meters. The delivery marks a significant step in the transformation of the energy landscape, enabling households to better manage energy consumption and support the wider grid infrastructure.
EDMI is currently the only company in the market that designs, manufactures, and supplies all eight SMETS2 device types.
The Communications Hub, a key part of this success, is a detachable gateway that integrates essential functions such as connectivity, data storage, and smart functionalities. Leveraging its expertise in SMETS2 technology, EDMI is set to expand its gateway solutions to new markets, supporting the transformation of the electricity system.
Michael Somersmith, Managing Director at EDMI Europe, remarked, “The pace of technology change requires new approaches, and separating the ‘smarts’ from the metrology is an exciting new path forward for us. Osaki Electric Co., Ltd, EDMI’s parent company in Japan, announced that they have signed and submitted a commitment letter to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) as the first step toward gaining certification of science-based targets (SBTs) for Osaki Group’s near-term targets.
Osaki Group has set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Scope 1 and 2 by 46% (compared to fiscal 2013 levels) by fiscal 2030. They also plan to address the environmental impact of the entire supply chain by formulating reduction targets, including Scope 3, within the next two years.
As part of the Osaki Group, EDMI will follow these targets, working with our stakeholders and business partners to minimise environmental impact and promote the sustainable development of society.
