The Challenge and the Benefit
Great Britain is targeting cleaner home energy by 2050. Smart meters are central to this shift—helping consumers make informed choices and improving national energy visibility. To support this, the government introduced SMETS standards to ensure device compatibility, managed under a regulated Smart Meter Communications License. The network was split into three regions, with Arqiva leading deployment in the north.
A key part of Arqiva’s role was designing and producing communication gateway devices to link the national network with smart meters across Great Britain. With a new government-defined specification, Arqiva sought a partner capable of developing a complex, upgradeable device that met Great Britain’s stringent technical and longevity requirements.
The EDMI Solution
Arqiva turned to EDMI for a proven smart metering solution.
EDMI had already demonstrated success with its AMI system—Atlas meters, cellular comms, and the MultiDrive Head End—deployed across over 1 million UK small-medium enterprise (SME) sites. Its ability to deliver both billing and interval data reliably gave Arqiva confidence in EDMI’s design and delivery expertise. Global projects and backing from Osaki Electric further reinforced EDMI’s strength as a trusted, long-term partner.

Key characteristics of the EDMI SMETS Offer
EDMI’s Comms Hub solution was delivered for Arqiva by navigating the intricate SMETS2 requirements with precision. EDMI's ability to define and implement interoperability standards enabled seamless integration of third-party meters, while our engineering expertise ensured compliance, scalability, and long-term reliability across Great Britain smart metering landscape.
EDMI’s focus on quality was key to success. Robust design and rigorous testing gave Arqiva the confidence that deployed assets would perform reliably over the long term.
EDMI’s swift implementation of SMETS2 requirements enabled full interoperability—ensuring seamless integration with third party devices and giving end customers confidence in the nationwide deployment.
EDMI’s strong local engineering support, combined with consistent firmware releases, ensures the platform stays secure, compliant, and continuously aligned with evolving regulatory needs.
Powering Nationwide Interoperability—Together
To support Arqiva’s SMETS2 rollout, EDMI delivered a robust, upgradeable communications hub and defined interoperability standards—enabling seamless integration of third-party meters and ensuring long-term compliance in a complex regulatory environment.
