From AMI to Near Real-Time Grid Intelligence: Why Utilities Need More Than Meter Data

The meter has quietly become one of the most valuable sensors a utility owns. The question is whether our infrastructure is ready to treat it that way.

For more than two decades, the value proposition of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) has been clear: remote meter reads, better billing accuracy, fewer field visits and faster outage detection. Those benefits still matter. But the electricity system AMI was designed to support is changing faster than the metering infrastructure itself.

Across Asia, rooftop solar is growing, EVs are creating new load patterns, and data centres and electrification are placing concentrated demand on parts of the network never designed for it. The distribution grid is becoming increasingly dynamic — and that raises a real question: is billing-grade AMI still enough to operate tomorrow’s electricity network? Increasingly, I believe it is not.

The next challenge is not simply collecting data, but providing decision support that is accurate, complete and consistently available. The instinct is often to collect more frequently — moving from daily reads towards 30-minute, 15-minute or five-minute intervals. But frequency alone doesn’t create intelligence. If millions of additional data points simply arrive in another dashboard, a utility may have more information but be no better off when it comes to making better decisions.

The objective isn’t maximum data — it’s the right amount of data to support the best possible operational outcome. Utilities need to move from asking how frequently they can read a meter to asking what decision that information can support. That is the shift from billing-grade AMI to decision-grade grid intelligence.

What decision-grade intelligence looks like

Consider the case of a distribution transformer. Traditional AMI tells a utility how much electricity was consumed — useful for billing and historical analysis. But operationally, the utility needs to know whether that transformer is approaching its limit during the evening peak, and whether it needs remedial action today or still has usable capacity. That’s where meter data becomes operational intelligence, contributing to decisions on network planning, asset life and demand-management set points.

The meter as an edge sensor

A smart meter shouldn’t be viewed simply as a device at the end of the billing chain. Collectively, smart meters give utilities a widely distributed network of sensors at the edge of the grid — where the network meets homes, solar systems, batteries and EV chargers. As electricity increasingly flows in both directions, a customer might consume power in the morning, export solar in the afternoon and charge an EV overnight. Utilities need visibility that keeps pace with that complexity. Five-minute data is useful, but five-minute intelligence — knowing what has changed and why — is far more valuable.

Investing more intelligently

Better visibility has an economic value as well as an operational one. Capital is limited, and utilities cannot upgrade every asset whenever demand rises. Understanding how an asset is actually used helps distinguish a genuine need for an upgrade or physical network change from headroom that already exists — allowing future grid investment to be directed where it creates the greatest value.

Designing for what the grid will need

Many utilities are still expanding their AMI deployments, which means they don’t have to repeat the path taken by markets that began 15 or 20 years ago. There’s an opportunity to design systems with tomorrow’s operational requirements in mind from the outset — starting where visibility creates the most value: high-loss networks, transformers, industrial customers, and EV or solar hotspots.

None of this works without trust in the underlying infrastructure. Meter accuracy, communications resilience, open interfaces and cybersecurity by design all matter. First comes data integrity, then the appropriate frequency, and then the analytics that turn information into operational insight. The value of real-time intelligence depends on the integrity of the entire chain beneath it — and on an open, interoperable architecture.

The real question utilities should be asking isn’t simply which data they can collect, or how much they can store economically, but what they want their AMI infrastructure to become. That is the transition from smart metering to EDMI’s grid intelligence, and it’s where we believe the next chapter of AMI begins.
